Look for "joint supplements" online and you'll find products promising to ease stiffness, protect cartilage and strengthen ageing bones. Some of those claims hold up under scrutiny. Others don't. This guide walks through the vitamins for bones and joints with genuine evidence behind them and how to build a routine that matches your own goals, whether that's bone density, joint comfort, or simply keeping active as you get older.

Why your joints and bones need extra support
Bone density peaks in your late twenties and gradually declines from there, while cartilage (the cushioning tissue at the end of your bones) has very little blood supply of its own, so it repairs itself slowly and relies on nutrients diffusing in from surrounding fluid.1 While this won't necessarily affect you dramatically day-to-day, the cumulative wear and tear on your joints over decades is why joint stiffness and bone-related concerns become more common from your forties onwards.
This is especially the case if you work a physical job or exercise frequently, which is why both highly active as well as older adults alike might be looking for vitamins for bones and joints as part of their routine.
Diet, weight-bearing exercise and body weight all play a bigger role than any single supplement, but several nutrients have genuine, well-documented roles in bone and muscle maintenance - which are sensible starting points if you're considering supplementation for your joints.
Do joint supplements actually work?
It depends on which you mean. Joint supplements as a category range from nutrients with a clear evidence, to botanical ingredients that show promising results, but still need more evidence to confidently establish a link.
Vitamin D, magnesium and vitamin C all have confirmed contributions to bones, muscle function or collagen formation.2 The benefits of turmeric (curcumin), standalone collagen and glucosamine are still being researched for joint function specifically. That doesn't mean they're ineffective - it means that more research and repeatable study results need to be carried out to establish their benefits for the wider population.
Vitamin D3 & K2: the foundation of bone health
Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and normal muscle function and also towards reducing the risk of falls linked to postural instability and muscle weakness in adults aged 60 and over.2 It works by helping your body absorb calcium and phosphorus from your diet. Without enough vitamin D, that calcium can't be used effectively regardless of how much you're eating.
The catch is that most of the UK can't make enough vitamin D from sunlight between October and March, which is why the NHS advises everyone to consider a daily 10 microgram supplement over the autumn and winter months, and year-round for people who are rarely outdoors or have limited sun exposure.3 Vitamin K2 works alongside vitamin D by helping direct calcium towards bone rather than soft tissue. Vitamin K is also proven to contribute to the maintenance of normal bones.2 OneVit Vitamin D3 & K2 combines both nutrients in one daily formulation.
Omega 3: what the evidence actually says about joints
At the moment, EPA and DHA's (the two main omega-3 fatty acids) confirmed benefit relates to the normal function of the heart, at a daily intake of 250mg.2
That said, EPA has been studied for its role in modulating inflammatory pathways, and a systematic review of 18 randomised controlled trials found a reduction in patient-reported pain among people with rheumatoid arthritis taking omega-3, with the clearest effects seen at doses of 3g to 6g a day.4 The findings are promising, but omega-3 shouldn't be relied on as a joint treatment - only as a supplement that can help. It still remains one of the most consistently useful supplements for general health regardless, and most UK adults don't eat the two portions of oily fish per week needed to meet intake targets from diet alone. OneVit Omega 3 provides concentrated EPA and DHA from marine sources.
Turmeric & Black Pepper: what curcumin can (and can't) claim
Turmeric's active compound, curcumin, is one of the most heavily researched botanical compounds worldwide, and it's a very popular choice among people looking for joint pain supplements.
A 2023 network meta-analysis pooling 23 randomised controlled trials and more than 2,000 people with knee osteoarthritis found curcumin produced a statistically significant reduction in pain scores compared with placebo.6 Trial results like this are encouraging and showed a clear improvement for patients. But the trials varied in dose, formulation and duration, and findings in clinical research don't necessarily mean that the benefits can be universally replicated.
Separately from efficacy, there's a well-established finding about absorption - curcumin on its own is poorly absorbed by the body, and a widely cited 1998 pharmacokinetic study found that combining it with piperine (the compound in black pepper) substantially increased how much curcumin reached the bloodstream.7 That's the reasoning behind pairing the two ingredients. OneVit Turmeric & Black Pepper combines curcumin extract with black pepper extract for this reason.
Marine Collagen Complex: cartilage and connective tissue
Cartilage is made largely of Type II collagen, water and proteoglycans, which is why collagen supplements are often marketed for joint comfort. Several placebo-controlled trials have found that daily hydrolysed collagen improved pain and function scores in people with knee osteoarthritis over several months,8 while a recent trial combining undenatured type II collagen with hydrolysed collagen found no meaningful benefit over placebo after 12 weeks.9
Vitamin C has clearer evidence. It contributes to normal collagen formation and for the normal function of bones, cartilage, gums, skin and blood vessels2, which is why it's included alongside the collagen peptides in this formulation. OneVit Marine Collagen Complex combines Type I hydrolysed marine collagen, sodium hyaluronate and vitamin C. It's not suitable for anyone with a fish allergy, and isn't vegan or vegetarian.
Magnesium: for bones, muscles and everything in between
Around 50 to 60% of the body's magnesium is stored in bone, and magnesium is proven to contribute to the maintenance of normal bones and to normal muscle function.2,10 That second claim matters for anyone dealing with cramping, muscle tightness around a joint, or general muscular support alongside bone health. UK adults are advised to get around 300mg a day for men and 270mg a day for women aged 19 to 64 from food and any supplements combined,11 and magnesium is one of the more commonly under-consumed minerals in UK diets. OneVit Magnesium provides magnesium citrate, a well-absorbed form.
What about glucosamine and chondroitin?
Glucosamine and chondroitin are among the most searched-for ingredients in relation to joint health. They're also one of the clearest examples of where popularity doesn't relate to effectiveness. NICE's current guideline on osteoarthritis (NG226) explicitly advises against offering glucosamine to manage the condition, stating there is no strong evidence of benefit, and NHS England guidance similarly advises against routine prescribing of glucosamine or chondroitin in primary care.12 Some individual trials have shown modest benefit in specific subgroups, but the overall picture from the highest-quality research doesn't support routine use. That's part of why you won't find glucosamine or chondroitin in the OneVit range.
How to choose the right joint and bone supplements for you
Start with your actual goal. If you're focused on bone health specifically, vitamin D3 & K2 and magnesium are the two with the strongest benefits. If it's general joint comfort as you get older or train regularly, omega 3 and marine collagen complex are the more commonly chosen additions. If adding curcumin appeals to you, turmeric & black pepper is the option to consider.
A few practical points apply across all of them. Check for allergies (fish-derived omega-3 and marine collagen aren't suitable for vegans, vegetarians or people with fish allergies), give any supplement at least four to twelve weeks of consistent use before judging whether it's making a difference, and remember that weight-bearing exercise and adequate dietary protein do more for long-term bone and joint health than any supplement on its own. How long do joint supplements take to work? This varies by ingredient. Vitamin D and magnesium can correct a genuine deficiency within a few weeks, while structural nutrients like collagen typically need eight to twelve weeks of consistent daily use before any difference becomes noticeable, if at all.
Do joint supplements actually work? Some do more reliably than others. Vitamin D, magnesium and vitamin C have are proven to contribute to bones, muscles and collagen formation. Omega 3, turmeric and collagen are show promising research for joints specifically, but haven't yet been definitely linked to joint health.
Is glucosamine worth taking for joint pain? Current NICE guidance advises against offering glucosamine for managing osteoarthritis, citing a lack of strong evidence. It isn't included in the OneVit joint range for this reason.
Can I take vitamin D3 & K2, omega 3, turmeric, collagen and magnesium together? Generally yes. These are commonly combined, and there's no known interaction risk between them at standard supplement doses. If you're on any prescribed medication, particularly blood thinners (relevant to vitamin K), speak to a pharmacist or GP before combining supplements.
Are joint and bone supplements safe to take every day? At standard doses, yes, for most healthy adults. Anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding, taking prescription medication, or managing an existing health condition should check with a GP or pharmacist first.
