What are probiotics?
Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are often described as "good" or "friendly" microorganisms.1 The most widely accepted scientific definition, published by the Food and Agriculture Organization and World Health Organization, describes them as live microorganisms that, when consumed in adequate amounts, confer a benefit to the host.2
In practice, "probiotic" is an umbrella term for a huge range of different species and strains, most commonly from the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium families, along with the yeast Saccharomyces boulardii. Research increasingly shows that the effects of probiotics are strain-specific, meaning a strain studied for one thing doesn't necessarily do anything for a different issue.3

How do probiotics work in the gut?

The same review found no meaningful benefit for other commonly sold strains, including Lactobacillus casei Shirota and Lactobacillus gasseri BNR17.3
During a course of antibiotics: Antibiotics don't just target the infection they're prescribed for - they disrupt gut bacteria broadly, which is why some people experience loose stools during treatment. Of all probiotic strains studied for this specific purpose, Saccharomyces boulardii and Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG have the most consistent trial evidence for reducing the likelihood of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea, in both children and adults.6,7
It's important to remember that probiotics aren't the 'cure-all' that many claim they are. When is the best time to take probiotics?
There's no single rule that applies to every product, because it depends on the formulation. If you've taken a probiotic consistently for a month with no noticeable change, it may simply not be the right strain for what you're trying to address.
