Biotin supplements are one of the most popular ways to support healthy hair, skin and nails, and for good reason: biotin plays a genuine, well-established role in keratin production, the process behind strong hair and resilient nails. This guide walks through what biotin does in the body, who's likely to benefit most, and how to get the most out of it.



What is biotin and why is it linked to hair, skin and nails?

Biotin, also called vitamin B7, is a water-soluble B vitamin that acts as a cofactor for enzymes involved in the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and proteins.1 Keratin production, the process that builds the structural protein in hair and nails, draws directly on this same metabolic machinery, which is exactly why biotin is such a natural fit for hair, skin and nail supplements.

Biotin supplements and blood tests: what you need to know

There's a particular situation worth knowing about if you're taking biotin. High-dose biotin supplements, the type commonly used for hair, skin and nails, can interfere with a group of laboratory tests called immunoassays. These are typically used for thyroid function checks, some heart-attack marker tests (troponin), and various hormone panels.8 Biotin in your blood at supplement-level doses can make these results falsely high or low, which has sometimes led to missed or incorrect diagnoses.8

This doesn't mean you need to avoid taking biotin. It's simply a reason to mention it if you need to take a blood test. If you're taking a biotin supplement, or a multivitamin, hair supplement or beauty blend that contains it, let your GP or the person taking your blood sample know. Vitamin C is the link between the two.
